The room that eventually became the library under went the most dramatic makeover. I once thought that ripping out the dinette in what used to be the dining area and lounge wasn’t an option… Below is what was:

Dining Room

I started off by ripping out the carpet in this room also.

Once I got the trim up in there, I felt that I had a proper dining room. Carpet in a place where you eat is silly!

Lounge

The lounge consisted of two cozy chairs with a minibar between them.

I liked having one chair, but felt that a second is too much. How many spaces do I need to sit?! I thought for a long time about ripping out just one chair and putting in a credenza with space for books after.

In the meantime, I ripped out that useless bar and wedged a cheap bookcase between the two chairs (my mother added the rods to hold the books):

A better use of space!

The bar wasn’t trashed. Instead, it gained new life as:

A useful cupboard in the study!

(It was hung on the wall at the foot of the ‘sofa’ and is just the right size for storing computer cables, extension cords, and other small computer accessories.)
