Thoughts on Gift Cards

Posted By Rae on November 20, 2009

I’ve been asked to review the gift card offerings of shop.com.

The site claims that gift cards make the best gift. I have to agree with a caveat. Yes, giving a gift card is just like giving cash except that you give cash for a specific place you think your giftee will want to shop. So, I think they make the perfect gift for someone you only know a little or someone who seems to already have ‘everything.’

We are entering my least favourite time of the year; the so-called ‘holiday’ season, where ‘holiday’ actually means ‘mass orgy of consumerism.’ You can’t enter a store between November and January without hearing Christmas music and being bombarded with advertisements that urge you to buy, buy, buy, buy. This has the opposite effect on me and I just want to go hibernate until February. It makes it very tempting to go to a site like shop.com, browse their categorized gift cards, and send them to people who like to shop with a note that says “Pick up something for yourself while you’re fighting the throngs!”

Sarcasm aside, it’s a neat site and I like how you can browse by broad category (eg. for her) and then narrow it down to more specific categories.
