Looking Back Fifteen Years

As 2011 slowly winds down, I can’t help but marvel that it has been 15 years since 1996, which was one of the most important years of my life.

It was in 1996 that I graduated from high school, took my first solo trip (to Quebec City), started college, represented Canada at an environmental youth summit in Colorado after being invited by Dr. Jane Goodall, and traveled to New York City (with my awesomely named history professor Dr. Jones!).

Seventeen was a great year for me!

  • Rae;
    I think there is a common theme with all people that travel young, they just never want to stop! Others are too scared/comfortable to venture out from home.

    As, l’m sure you know, once you get bitten from the travel bug, it’s hard to flick it off.

    My first solo trip was when l was 18, my parents let me go on a single cruise (what were they thinking?), they advised me to go travel before l settle down and have kids. Well, neither of those things happened to me, the settling down or having kids. I rack it up to the bug l was bitten with.

    Keep moving!!!

  • What’s interesting is that I wanted to take time off to travel, but my mother insisted I go to school, saying it would be very hard to do so if I took time off. That was a valid point, but I think that having the time off to figure out what I wanted to study would have been good.

    The big trip of my life was definitely at 19 when I backpacked around Scotland for a month.

  • Scotland is very cool, and by backpack, no less. I would also like to do Ireland, England, anywhere with castles and history! lol

    I lived in Virginia for 2 years, and every weekend l sent to historical sights, museums in DC, and cities with in a 5 hour radius. I loved my time there.

    I love learning how things were, how things are, and how things will change.

  • I love that part of the US, the big radius around DC, and look forward to spending quite some time there in late April/early May.
